Ian Somerhalder has portrayed vampire bro Damon since the Vampire Diaries premiered in 2009, and there’s no one who knows this character quite as intimately. So, with The Vampire Diaries bowing out in a mere two episodes, it’s worth wondering: what would Somerhalder say to Damon if he could? E! News posed that question to Somerhalder, and it turns out that the actor is just as frustrated with Damon’s inability to learn from his mistakes as the audience is.
As much as I adore Damon and his bad boy behavior (his murder-y ways are acceptable for the screen, if not in real life) there’s pretty much no changing Damon’s mind once it’s made up. Take his love of Katherine (Nina Dobrev), for example. Elena’s snarky doppelganger was the worst to Damon: Katherine was totally in love with his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley), but that didn’t stop Damon from risking everything to save her. Thank God Elena shared her face, but none of her sociopathic tendencies.
According to Somerhalder’s interview with E! News, the actor hopes Damon learns from his mistakes moving forward… though he’s not so optimistic about it:
“You know the old idea of fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on you? Damon never really got that,” …I don’t think he ever really got the whole, ‘Ow, fire hot, Ow fire hot’ thing.”
Gotta agree with Somerhalder here. How many times did Damon turn off his humanity, only to go on a murderous rampage that nearly sent him to the brink? Honestly, one time should have been enough for him never to try it again.
While the actor may not be thrilled with Damon’s past behavior, he still has a lot of love for the vampire. He told E! News:”I love this guy, and he was amazing to play for eight years.”
I love Damon, too: enough to not want him to spend his eternal life making the same mistake over and over again.

Thank you. And now, here’s Damon’s Diary:
Hello, Brother… I mean, hello Friday people… It’s Ian and for sure a bit of Damon typing here. My dear friend and boss Julie Plec and our amazing friends at EW were kind enough to let me jot down an entry into Julie’s weekly diary so that I could share a moment with you all to talk about episode 716 of The Vampire Diaries. The list of all the people who made this and every episode is so long it would take up this whole “Diary” entry, so I just wanted to say that I love and am thankful to every single member of this crew that makes this story come to life each week. I’m truly grateful to have had this opportunity to talk with you all after tonight’s episode and will get right to it.
The last time I got to direct an episode the story was much darker, more dangerous, pushing our characters (Caroline and Stefan) to the brink of pure evil. This time was a bit different. This story required a much more layered approach because it was setting up our current timeline, three years in the future. No more bookending the episodes with the flash forwards; we will stay right here. For now at least…
“Days of Future Past” had more story lines built into it, all of them laden with heavy consequences, all building simultaneously into an emotional crescendo and then abruptly ending in tragedy with our hero in the Hell Stone and no way to get him out.
I was actually very lucky, because I directed 616 last year and 716 this year, which fell within the window of the Christmas hiatus. I feel super fortunate to have had that stroke of scheduling luck because I got much more time with the script while I was on vacation with my family. It was great being there in the mountains with the peace and quiet of white snow that really allowed my mind to dream of shots, performance, and style.
Directing anything from a short film to an episode of television or a big-budget studio film is quite a journey with so many moving parts. Every moment, you are racing against the clock, living with two major issues breathing down your neck at ALL times. Yep, much like in life, those two major things are time and money. How quickly and successfully can you capture the story on the page, in your head, and on the story board in the time allowed, using a very set amount of money to do it? Kind of like life, right?
“The Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder revealed in a new interview that when Damon Salvatore returns to the world after being desiccated for three years, he is going to have to patch up his friendship with the witch Bonnie Bennett.
“Coming back into the fray, she is not having it,” he explained. “She is not happy with him at all. Why should she be? He abandoned her. There’s no two ways about it. So he’s really going to have to build that back up as the season continues.”
“The Vampire Diaries” star added that part of the reason why Bonnie is so mad is because she has done so much for her friend and he has always been trouble for her.
“Like Stefan, she goes through great lengths to try to help him, and she constantly gets the short end of the stick,” Somerhalder said. “She tries so hard to give him the benefit of the doubt because they’re bonded. There’s a bond there, and he does love her. She is his best friend. She and Ric are really his best friends, other than his brother.”
Somerhalder noted that Damon is going to have to contend with his selfish actions and how his mistakes have ruined Stefans’s life by the end of the seventh season.
“Damon is the biggest burden on the planet,” he noted. “He’s Stefan’s biggest liability, and I say that with love. Damon is desiccating and it was a super cowardly act. He left everyone high and dry, but because he is such a vulnerable character, the audience forgives him. At the end of the day, this guy does terrible things and gets away with it.”
“This one was really about telling the story of this whole group of individuals and how they are all intersecting,” Somerhalder explained. “We lost some very wonderful, very beautiful characters in this episode.”
“The Vampire Diaries” co-creator Julie Plec recently talked about the fate of the hit The CW series after season 7.
In an interview with E! News, Plec said that she recently came to the realization that “The Vampire Diaries” is really about Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.
“I finally realized that my destiny on this show, creatively, is tied in to Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. And I mean that in a good way. As long as those boys who I now consider my friends want to keep telling the story, then I won’t walk away from telling the story,” she said.
Meanwhile, Plec added that if one or both Somerhalder and Wesley will inform her that they no longer want to be part of “The Vampire Diaries,” that’s the time she would have the show cancelled.
“When they are ready to be done telling the story – which could be tomorrow and could be a year from now or two years from now or whatever — I will put my pencil down and say that I’m done too, and then we will work together to end it in the best way possible,” she said.
Plec added that when it’s time to say goodbye to the series, she, Somerhalder and Wesley will make the creative decision on how the show will end.
According to the exec, she misses Dobrev terribly, and she’s still open to taking her back on the show.
“Yes, I miss her deeply and would take her back in an instant if she called and said, ‘Hey, can I come back?’ But purely from a creative point of view, it’s been a real new infusion of creative fun,” she said.
“The Vampire Diaries” season 7 will return to The CW on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. ET.
“Vampire Diaries” fans are rejoicing for the good news: Delena was crowned as the Best TV couple of 2015! The star-crossed lovers bested 18 TV couples in MTV’s voting list of 2015.
Despite Nina Dobrev’s departure last season, Delena still got the top spot. According to MTV, Delena is “timeless,” and the show must thank all passionate “Vampire Diaries” fans. Fans stood by the couple since the beginning of the show in 2009.
Fans started shipping for Delena when Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) was still with Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). The love triangle brought ships of Team Stelena vs. Team Delena. And in the show’s fourth season, Delena fans finally got their wish!
Although Elena is missing in action this season, the site noted that she wasn’t entirely forgotten. But without Elena physically around, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) seems to be going off the edge with his “madcap ways.” Since he’s currently trapped inside the Phoenix Stone, he’s probably reflected on what Elena would say about his actions.
According to MTV, that was the “crux” of Delena’s relationship. Damon and Elena breathed life into each other. Without Elena, Damon feels lost – the same thing that happened to Elena at the beginning of Season 6.
Despite speculations on Nina’s rumoured return, it looks like fans may never get another Delena moment.
