Actor Ian Somerhalder was forced to delay a trip to Louisiana for his eco organisation on Sunday after storms swept in.
Tropical Storm Isaac lashed the Florida Keys and headed towards the northern Gulf Coast, prompting officials in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to declare states of emergency.
The Vampire Diaries star had been planning to travel to Louisiana in aid of his non-profit organisation the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF), which he set up to raise awareness of environmental issues – but the bad weather affected his trip.
In a post on his Twitter.com page, Somerhalder writes, “Damn hurricane get’n (getting) in the way of me going down to Louisiana to fight to preserve the ISFsanctuary land from be’n (being) destroyed by a development.”
Jason Alexander also took to his account on the microblogging site to tell followers his elderly mother was in storm-lashed Florida – but was confident she would be fine.
He joked, “My 92 year old mommy is in the middle of the Florida hurricane. She’s a tough bird. I wouldn’t bet on the hurricane.”
The storm, which is predicted to turn into a hurricane by Tuesday, comes seven years to the week that Hurricane Katrina destroyed large parts of New Orleans in Louisiana, and rapper Meek Mill has urged his followers to stay safe.
He adds, “7 years ago, New Orleans was hit by Hurricane Katrina. Today, Hurricane Issac is headed their way. PLEASE PRAY. R-T (re-tweet) TO GET THE WORD OUT.”
Last year, Ian Somerhalder testified in front of Congress in support of wildlife and environmental conservation. Now, he’s taking that mission into his own hands, with a proposed animal sanctuary to be built in Louisiana through his Ian Somerhalder Foundation that will simultaneously aim to rehabilitate bullying teens by having them work with animals.
“We cannot progress as a society, as a people, if we lack compassion,” Somerhalder tells PEOPLE. “[This place] is not only protecting animals, but allowing kids to come from all over the country, hopefully all over the world … and showing them compassion with these animals that have also been abandoned, also have behavioral issues and have been ostracized.”
Inspired by the younger fan following he’s acquired as a result of The Vampire Diaries, helping both of these groups, animals and society’s youth, has become a passion close to the actor’s heart.
“I know animals extremely well and I know young people extremely well,” he says. “Youth empowerment is the only way that you and I are going to get old and be okay, and I mean that. I live my life by it.”
For Somerhalder, growing up along Louisiana’s gulf coast led to a lifelong appreciation for the environment around him, an insight he looks forward to sharing with others.
“It’s one of the most beautiful, delicate ecosystems in the world,” he says. “That propelled me in my life to always go out into the world understanding that compassion and preservation of our wildlife and our natural environment is absolutely imperative. Animals are our companions in life, and without them, the world would suck.”
That attitude extends to Somerhalder’s home life, where he is a proud pet dad to three cats rescued from across North America.
“My life ultimately would not work without all these little creatures that crawl around in the night and snuggle up next to me,” he says. “They literally make my world a better place. I can’t imagine my life without them, and when taking care of them and having them take care of you, it’s such a symbiosis. When you really live with pets, you really see how incredibly emotionally evolved they are.”
For months “Fifty Shades of Grey” fans have obsessed over who E L James would consider for the role of Christian Grey in the upcoming movie adaptation. The author as well as producers, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, have shot down casting rumors. Most recently the producing duo appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box and reiterated that they were focusing on finding a screenwriter and director before delving into casting. Yet with all the rumor squashing there has finally been some credible news on the casting front.
Ian Somerhalder, an early fan favorite, told fans at a “Vampire Diaries” convention on August 19 that he is going to meet with the “Fifty Shades of Grey” film team. He did not give any details about who he would be meeting with but did say he would be leaving for LA next week. Fans in the convention hall began clapping and hollering. Kimberly Perek attended the convention, she said Ian was asked by another fan if he was interested in playing Christian Grey. Perek said “fans were thrilled” and went on to say “we have been wanting information like this for so long so everyone flipped.”
Fans will be very excited over this new development, yet it is the first step of many in the casting process. The movie team will probably meet with many actors to play the role of Christian Grey. There are also reports that E L James herself will get final approval for all casting decisions.
Update: Producer Dana Brunetti is not aware of a meeting with Ian Somerhalder. When asked via Twitter about a possible meeting he responded saying, “not that I know of, so I doubt it…”
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev are back to traveling. “The Vampire Diaries” co-stars and real-life lovers often travel together whether it be for business or pleasure. On August 18, Ian and Nina shared their travel plans with their Twitter followers, spending the weekend out of Atlanta where they film TVD. Although they traveled to different cities, they were both on the move nonetheless.
“Ahhh New York city how I’ve missed you (sic),” Ian tweeted. Nina, on the other hand, spent time in Florida. “Welcome to Miami… Bienvenido a Miiiami (sic),” she tweeted. It is believed that Ian and Nina are both back in Georgia so that they can get back to work on Monday morning.
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev spend most of their weekends traveling. Many times they are going somewhere together but sometimes they take advantage of their time off and do their own things. They both have plenty of friends in different places and since they see each other almost every day, it is really no big deal for them to go their separate ways on the weekends.
Ian and Nina had quite the year traveling in 2012. They went to Spain, LA, New York, and Idaho for some skiing around the holidays. They also spent plenty of time on their own too, and that makes their relationship super healthy.
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev will undoubtedly be traveling again soon.
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev are both back to work on The Vampire Diaries but they most certainly find time to relax now and then. While their schedules have them working long, hard hours, they make sure to use their spare time wisely.
“Shark week mania!! Timing couldn’t be better.. I’m going through Olympic withdrawals (sic),” Nina tweeted on Monday. “Settling down after long day/night of #tvd Good night beautiful world—stay cool (sic),” Ian tweeted on Wednesday. It sounds like Ian and Nina both like to just stay in and kick back when they have a late night—or an early morning.
Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev are more than likely spending these nights in front of the television together. They have been dating for a couple of years now and while they are careful not to reveal too much about their private lives, fans believe that they spend a ton of time together—even if it’s just at home hanging out.
I have added DVD screencaps from series 2 of The Vampire Diaries including extras.
