“The Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder revealed in a new interview that when Damon Salvatore returns to the world after being desiccated for three years, he is going to have to patch up his friendship with the witch Bonnie Bennett.
“Coming back into the fray, she is not having it,” he explained. “She is not happy with him at all. Why should she be? He abandoned her. There’s no two ways about it. So he’s really going to have to build that back up as the season continues.”
“The Vampire Diaries” star added that part of the reason why Bonnie is so mad is because she has done so much for her friend and he has always been trouble for her.
“Like Stefan, she goes through great lengths to try to help him, and she constantly gets the short end of the stick,” Somerhalder said. “She tries so hard to give him the benefit of the doubt because they’re bonded. There’s a bond there, and he does love her. She is his best friend. She and Ric are really his best friends, other than his brother.”
Somerhalder noted that Damon is going to have to contend with his selfish actions and how his mistakes have ruined Stefans’s life by the end of the seventh season.
“Damon is the biggest burden on the planet,” he noted. “He’s Stefan’s biggest liability, and I say that with love. Damon is desiccating and it was a super cowardly act. He left everyone high and dry, but because he is such a vulnerable character, the audience forgives him. At the end of the day, this guy does terrible things and gets away with it.”
“This one was really about telling the story of this whole group of individuals and how they are all intersecting,” Somerhalder explained. “We lost some very wonderful, very beautiful characters in this episode.”
“Vampire Diaries” fans are rejoicing for the good news: Delena was crowned as the Best TV couple of 2015! The star-crossed lovers bested 18 TV couples in MTV’s voting list of 2015.
Despite Nina Dobrev’s departure last season, Delena still got the top spot. According to MTV, Delena is “timeless,” and the show must thank all passionate “Vampire Diaries” fans. Fans stood by the couple since the beginning of the show in 2009.
Fans started shipping for Delena when Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) was still with Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). The love triangle brought ships of Team Stelena vs. Team Delena. And in the show’s fourth season, Delena fans finally got their wish!
Although Elena is missing in action this season, the site noted that she wasn’t entirely forgotten. But without Elena physically around, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) seems to be going off the edge with his “madcap ways.” Since he’s currently trapped inside the Phoenix Stone, he’s probably reflected on what Elena would say about his actions.
According to MTV, that was the “crux” of Delena’s relationship. Damon and Elena breathed life into each other. Without Elena, Damon feels lost – the same thing that happened to Elena at the beginning of Season 6.
Despite speculations on Nina’s rumoured return, it looks like fans may never get another Delena moment.

By now, it is becoming more and more evident that The Vampire Diaries has seen better days. Although the series was once a huge draw for The CW, Nina Dobrev’s departure at the end of last season has proven to be a negative impact in the show’s ratings. With rumors of a cancellation mounting, is Ian Somerhalder getting ready to quit the series and follow Dobrev’s lead?
According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, Somerhalder’s future with the series may be dependent on his relationship with wife Nikki Reed. Apparently, the marriage between Somerhalder and Reed is not at a high point, and the Vampire Diaries star wants to be a dad before the series is over. However, Reed is not ready to start having children just yet, which has driven a wedge between the two stars.
To add further complications to the matter, The Vampire Diaries has seen a large reduction in the amount of viewers tuning in each week. For the most part, this drop in ratings has a direct correlation with Dobrev no longer being a part of the show. Things have gotten so bad for the series that the network recently announced the show would be moved from its regular night to Fridays when it returns to television.
With the future of the show in question, Ian Somerhalder may have good reasons to quit the series before the network decides to pull the plug on The Vampire Diaries. In fact, it has been known that Somerhalder has had a strong desire to start a family in the past. With the actor turning 37 a week ago, Somerhalder might have a lot of motivation to quit and start a family before he gets too old. With The Vampire Diaries heading downhill, this might be the perfect time for Somerhalder to call it quits.
That being said, Reed may not be willing to start having kids, especially considering how the actress is busy building up her own career in Hollywood. Although Reed has not had a major role since her part in the Twilight series, she was recently cast for a spot on Sleepy Hollow. With her career beginning to shape up, it isn’t clear if she is willing to risk her career at this time in order to start a family with Somerhalder.
Meanwhile, Realty Today is reporting that Somerhalder’s character, Damon Salvatore, may be set to be killed off in a coming episode. Apparently, Somerhalder believes that fans no longer value his character now that Elena is out of the picture, and the actor has no problems with producers killing his character off.
The idea that the series might be ready to end Damon’s life was hinted during a previous episode. In the installment, Damon is caught in a dangerous pit where his life may be in peril. Whether or not Damon gets out of his predicament is yet to be seen.
At the same time, it is always possible that Somerhalder will remain a part of The Vampire Diaries. After all, just because the show has been moved to a new night doesn’t necessarily mean that a cancellation is on the horizon. However, the biggest hurdle moving forward is definitely boosting the show’s ratings, which saw a decrease of over 30 percent in the last episode.
With one episode, titled “Mommie Dearest,” managing to gain the smallest amount of viewers in the history of the network, the series has a lot of work to do if it wants to prevent a future cancellation. At this time, Somerhalder has yet to release an official statement on the matter and let fans know what his future plans entail.
To celebrate the return of our favorite vamps, ET caught up with star Ian Somerhalder to get the exclusive scoop into Damon‘s mindset now that his soulmate is locked in a perpetual slumber — totally normal problem, right? — and if Elena will still be a part of the storyline despite Nina Dobrev‘s departure from the show.
Plus, we asked Somerhalder to spill what Candice King‘s baby bombshell will mean for Caroline and Stefan on the show and — Spoiler Alert! — his answer will either make you laugh or explode with rage!
Last April, fans were devastated when Dobrev dropped the news that she would be leaving the hit CW series, and when we said goodbye to Elena in thatshocking season six finale, we sobbed a river of tears.
Now as we move into the next chapter of the supernatural saga, we caught up with Somerhalder at the first-ever live Words With Friends tournament to benefit the ASPCA in Los Angeles last week, and he promised fans that even though Elena is gone, she will not be forgotten.
“There is a really incredible evolution of the story that is going to happen and she’s still within the story,” the actor revealed to ET. “She’s very much present in the hearts and the mind of all the characters.”
But should Delena fans be worried that another girl will come in and steal Damon’s heart? “That is so far down the road,” he said. (And the entire Delena fandom just let out a collective sigh of relief.)
He continued, “I mean, look, she told him, ‘Listen, you waited for Katherine for 150 years and you weren’t a saint. Don’t sit around and wait.’ She said, ‘Go have fun!’ And he does whatever she tells him to.” But knowing our Damon, we’re going to keep our fingers crossed that for just this once, he doesn’t do what Elena tells him to.
Somerhalder also confessed that he’s still a little baffled at how Damon and Elena became soulmates in the first place. “I said from the beginning — even when it was about Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena — ‘How in the world can people want this girl to be with either one of these guys?'” he asked.
“They’ve basically killed everyone she has ever known, she burned her house down because she was so distraught. Damon tried to kill her brother not once, but twice, and Damon is 174 and she’s 18!” he exclaimed with a smirk. “It is the ultimate version of cradle-robbing.”
According to E! Online article,
The Enzo and Damon bromance is alive and kicking—in real life, at least. The Vampire Diaries star Michael Malarkey almost got into a little trouble with his wife, actress Nadine Lewington, last week, and it’s all because of Ian Somerhalder.
“One thing I can tell you is he gave me a hickey this week in Vegas,” Malarkey told E! News at the iHeartRadio Music festival of his co-star. “I tried to cover it up a little bit and it’s just kind of a hard thing to explain to the Mrs.”
“We were just messing around in the photo op booth because we had a convention in Vegas,” Malarkey said, referring to the Vampire Diaries convention that he and Somerhalder were attending. “Ian said everyone needs a little bit of Malarkey, and then he took a bite out of my neck.”
Malarkey even made Somerhalder record a video for his wife, explaining that he was the one responsible for the hickey.
While the bite may have been a friendly joke, things aren’t so friendly between the two vampires when season 7 of The Vampire Diaries starts back up in October, thanks to Enzo having buddied up to Damon’s mother in the fight against the heretics.
“As far as my character goes, there is loads of good, juicier stuff,” Malarkey teased. “My character will have a new love interest, so there is something on the table.”
He also revealed that Enzo will be forced to make some “big decisions,” and it forces him to reveal a softer side of himself. However, that doesn’t mean the old Enzo is gone! Malarkey teased some “amazing” fight scenes that had him completely drenched in sweat.
“We literally ramped it up and juiced it up, so I am pumped,” he told us. “It will be so good.”
